Thurs. 10/23/2008  Amsterdam 0 Guilderland 8     NonLeague

Game Comments:
GUILDERLAND - The Guilderland Dutchmen showed Amsterdam the kind of play that made them the top team in the Suburban Council this season.

The Rams, the No. 7 team from the Big 10-Plus, fell 8-0 to the unbeaten Dutchmen in Thursday's first round of the Section II Class AA tournament.

"They're going to go very far in sectionals," Amsterdam coach Alfredo Ramirez said. "They have depth. That's one thing that will definitely help them continue on their winning ways. They're a strong team and are well-coached with incredible numbers."

The Dutchmen put up four goals in the first half and played a lot of their bench in the second half.

Amsterdam came into the game with a high-energy game plan and even generated the game's first scoring attempt. In the fourth minute, a cross found the head of midfielder Phil Miskinis, but the shot went wide.

The Rams maintained their level of play until the second Guilderland goal. They played with the Dutchmen for about 15 minutes, then fatigue started to set in and the Dutchmen were ready to make the reserves pay for any miscue.

"We came out to play a strong game and it showed in the first 10 or 15 minutes," Ramirez said. "We set the pace and showed these guys we can hang with them. Unfortunately, being young and not having a lot of depth to come in and assist - we got a little tired and made a couple subs, then they started capitalizing on our mistakes. But for the most part, I'm very proud of these guys."

The Dutchmen showed their passing prowess throughout the game with quick passing combinations that were on the mark from both short and long distance. In the 10th minute, they made one such pass pay off, even after Amsterdam goalkeeper John Toper got a foot on it.

Sahr Nyuma sent a low pass across the 18-yard box near the 6, where Toper got a foot on it, but the ball spun past him to Rory Nunamacher, who ran it into the net.

In the 14th minute, Christopher Stillman send a cross into the box for Anthony Campagnano, who finished with a header.

It was soon after that second goal that Amsterdam stopped having success with the offside trap. Although the Dutchmen were ready to run, that controlled their impulses and waited for the right moment to make runs.

"We're pretty experienced," Guilderland coach Mike Kinnally said. "That's going to work for a little while. We make adjustments and that's what coaches are for. You put people in and change the way you play and that's not really an issue anymore."

In the 20th minute, Nunamacher assisted on a goal by Nyuma, returning the favor for the first goal. In the 35th minute, Anthony Powers scored on a pass from Patrick Quinn.

The Dutchmen almost had another goal in the first half when Ryan Ashbaugh headed a ball toward the goal in the 30th minute. Toper made the stop, but when he came down to the ground with the ball, found himself holding the ball on the line, making the save by a few inches.

A freshman, Toper finished with 12 saves as the Rams were outshot 29-4.

"Toper, our keeper, I can't say enough about him," Ramirez said. "The kid showed today he can play against anybody. He's a very talented keeper and he's young."

Guilderland starting goalkeeper Devin Bailey made one save on a Miskinis direct kick in the 39th minute from about 50 yards.

In the second half, the Dutchmen got back in the scoring book when Patrick Clancy poked the rebound of a Nunamacher shot into the net in the 44th minute. In the 46th, Nunamacher assisted on the second goal by Campagnano. Powers got his second goal in the 68th minute on an assist from Zachary Matteo. Jordan Siskin scored the final goal in the 79th minute when a Rams defender cleared the ball, but it ricocheted off Maxwell Richards and landed in front of Siskin.

Kinnally said the second-half playing time for his reserves should help prepare them for the rest of the tournament. The Dutchmen (19-0-0 overall) play again Monday against the winner of Niskayuna and Ballston Spa, which play today.

"It helps get the jitters out," Kinnally said. "We got everybody in tonight, which was good."

The Rams (2-12-1 overall) will lose five seniors to graduation, including sweeper Robert Furman, Miskinis, Jose Serrano, Alex Suidy and Aaron Surento. Surento was unable to make the trip to Guilderland because of a previous commitment he could not break, Ramirez said.

He said it will be hard to fill the shoes of his departing seniors.

"The unfortunate thing is that I don't have much in numbers coming up to the varsity next year and I lose five very strong players," Ramirez said. "It'll be back to the drawing board and we'll see what we can come up with. However, we will be a little bit older next year."

Mon. 10/27/2008  Niskayuna 0 Guilderland 2     NonLeague

Game Comments:
Ryan Ashbaugh scored both Guilderland goals to leading the Dutchmen to the semi-finals at Colonie.

Thurs. 10/30/2008  Shaker 1 Guilderland 2  Yes  OT NonLeague

Tues. 11/4/2008  Shenendehowa 2 Guilderland 3     NonLeague

Game Comments:
Guilderland only had one shot in the first half and it would be a goal. Caleb Ciaschetti split the Shen defense with a pass and Nyuma beat John Mabee to the ball and tapped it home.  The Flying Dutchmen took a 2 to 0 lead at the five-minute mark. Travis Moore let a free kick fly from around midfield that landed in the sea of white and green in front of the goal. Nyuma got a toe on it and Campagnano chased it to the end line where he hit it with his left with no real angle. It went over Mabee’s head for the score.  Shortly after, Shen would get on the board. Bobby Buchanan lofted one into the box and Miner touched it to Luke Popolizio for the goal. It happened quickly, 2-1 Dutch.

The Plainsmen netted another goal in the following minute on a breakdown by the Guilderland defense. Chris Curley received a pass from David Clemens and Curley’s low shot got by Bailey. The Dutchmen lead had deflated to nothing, now tied 2-2.

“A 2 to 0 lead is the worst lead to have because once the other team scores they just build on the momentum,” said Kinnally. “I give my defense a lot of credit. We only gave up 11 goals this year and nine were from free kicks.”

Bailey had a dramatic save on Miner point blank, followed by a one timer by Guilderland’s Pat Quinn that went just wide. Then, Ciaschetti flew one over the crossbar. The teams’ offenses were no longer shy.

“This was an attractive game,” Kinnally said.

With about 15 minutes left, Moore set up another free kick from midfield. The service was right on goal like last time and Ciaschetti freed the ball. Mabee pounced on it just in time for the save and the game remained tied.

The Dutchmen magic happened in the final five minutes. Both teams were trying to force in a goal to save the game from overtime. Guilderland would do just that.

Stillman had the spotlight and the ball. He dribbled confidently into the box and sent a left foot over a diving Mabee for the game winner. Guilderland secured its first AA championship since 1997, 3-2.

“I don’t even know who passed it to me, but I thank them,” said Stillman. “Winning this hasn’t sunk in yet. I’m looking forward to regionals.”

Fri. 11/7/2008  Guilderland 0 Baldwinsville 1     NonLeague

Game Comments:
Guilderland would fall behind at the 19 minute mark when a goal kick accidentally hit a Guilderland defender and fell upon the foot of an on-coming Bees' striker who neatly finished the play.   The score would hold for the remainder of the game ending Guilderland's state title dreams.
