Goals: Collett (1), ... (1)

Thank you to Jambu for helping out and providing this week's report again! - In the first quarter, Seungrok Han had a great free kick, which Derek Collett put into the goal; 1-0 to FMS. Second quarter: Several saves by Flynn McCallum off corners and free kicks. Justin Petti makes some great tackles, and Riley Cusack was very close to making another goal. Good passing was achieved by Noah. Third quarter: Excellent tackling by Steven Huang. Julius Negel takes a shot at goal, but misses the mark. Mont Pleasant is getting stronger as the game progresses. In spite of good defensive effort by FMS, Mont Pleasant scores twice in this quarter, despite more saves by Flynn. 1-2 at quarter end. Fourth quarter: Guilderland in more trouble as MP scores two more.  Excitement towards the end, as Guilderland scores off a corner kick (not sure by whom). Final score 2-4.

Goals: Negel (1)

Guilderland arrived in Rotterdam to join what seemed like the entire Mohonasen school sports community outside in beautiful weather, with football practice, hockey and other soccer games going on around them.  As speculated by one observer, it was perhaps all these distractions that caused Guilderland to give a rather lackluster display in the first half  [...]

09/25/2015 @Niskayuna: Niskayuna 4 - Guilderland 2
Goals: Han (2)

Guilderland fielded a strong and enthusiastic team against Niskayuna on a beautiful September Friday afternoon.  Although Niskayuna slipped into the lead, Guilderland was quick to level the scores through Seungrok Han. After some even exchanges between the teams, the pattern was repeated with Seungrok Han’s second goal, assisted by Noah Hickey, canceling out Niskayuna's lead to again level the scores. Guilderland continued the good work in the second half, with some deft touches by VanDeusen and a shot that went narrowly wide from Hickey after a good build-up on the right hand side. Julius Negel's strong physique, firm tackling and hard running caused the Niskayuna defense all kinds of problems, in particular when he burst through five defenders only to be foiled by some brave Niskayuna goalkeeping. Negel later fired narrowly wide after good work by Hickey on the left.  Guilderland's efforts were fortified by the industry of Han, who had one shot brilliantly saved by the goalkeeper and who saw another shot blaze just wide. Steven Huang was solid in the middle, with one tackle that was particularly noteworthy as it lead to a great move down the right. In defense Flynn McCullum showed promise as he made a number of interceptions and tackles. In the end, however, Guilderland were unlucky to lose 4-2 to a fast and physical Niskayuna team.

09/21/2015 @ Troy: Troy 5 - Guilderland 2
Goals: Hickey (1), Han (1)

Today was a difficult match against Troy, whose team seemed well on its way to college in terms of size (specifically see #s 10 and 1 in photos). Guilderland had some phenomenal passing and runs down the line, in particular from Noah Manzella, Derek Collett and Steven Huang. Owen VanDeusen had a jaw dropping run down the line to defend and prevent a goal. Charles Joseph also prevented a sure goal right before the half, appearing out of nowhere to clear the ball. Jeff Burleigh had some beautiful runs in offense, and just generally had a great game, with hard forward play. First goal was scored by Noah Hickey. Noah Manzella, active in many plays, was fouled and received a penalty kick, taken by Seungrok Han (The Rock), who scored our second goal. Jonathan VanWormer was generally fearless, and Riley Cusack showed great speed, determination and his usual athletic prowess. Aidan Doyle was fouled and injured in the second half, but recovered and returned.

09/18/2015: Preseason scrimmage vs. Albany

A fantastic scrimmage was played yesterday between Guilderland Boys Modified and Albany.  Our players were fast and focussed, with particularly strong forward play from Owen VanDeusen and Derek Collett. Two beautiful goals were scored by Seungrok Han and, off the left boot, Aidan Doyle.  Strong passing was achieved by Aidan Doyle, Noah Hickey, Jake Anderson and Steven Huang.  Flynn McCallum, Raphael Schmitt and Samuel Matkin did a great job as goalies, saving many more goals than they let in. Justin Petti was seen, as usual, being fast, furious and focussed as he ran down strikers to stop their play.  Steven Huang was taken off the field due to an injury in the second half, but recovered nicely.  First game on Monday, 9/21, in Troy.

09/16/2015:  Preseason scrimmage vs. Averill Park

The final score at the end of the first scrimmage for the Guilderland Boys Modified team belied the great effort and energy expended during the game. Lots of passing and fighting for the ball, often lead by Steven Huang, made for a very exciting game, and culminated in some missed opportunities for both sides. Averil Park was able to score two goals, but missed many more because of stellar Guilderland goal keeping.
